Non-personal verb forms, and what you build with themLas formas no personales, y lo que se construye con ellas
Every Spanish verb has three forms that never change for person: the infinitive (comer), the gerund (comiendo) and the participle (comido). On their own they're simple. Combined with another verb, they build some of the most useful structures in the language — voy a comer, sigo comiendo, he comido. Tap through the tabs, flip the cards, then test yourself at the end.Todo verbo español tiene tres formas que nunca cambian según la persona: el infinitivo (comer), el gerundio (comiendo) y el participio (comido). Solas son sencillas. Combinadas con otro verbo, construyen algunas de las estructuras más útiles del idioma — voy a comer, sigo comiendo, he comido. Recorre las pestañas, gira las tarjetas y ponte a prueba al final.

Compare hablo, hablas, habla… (personal forms — a different ending for every person) with hablar, hablando, hablado (non-personal forms — always the same, no matter who's doing the action). That's the whole distinction: personal forms tell you who; non-personal forms just name the action, show it in progress, or show it as a finished result.Compara hablo, hablas, habla… (formas personales — una terminación distinta para cada persona) con hablar, hablando, hablado (formas no personales — siempre iguales, sea quien sea el que actúa). Esa es toda la diferencia: las formas personales dicen quién; las no personales solo nombran la acción, la muestran en progreso, o la muestran como resultado terminado.

Watch outCuidadoEnglish speakers often learn a different "three forms" at school: eat – ate – eaten (base form, past simple, past participle). That list is not the same as the Spanish non-personal forms. Don't confuse comer – comiendo – comido with como – comí – comido — the second list is personal, conjugated forms.Los angloparlantes suelen aprender en el colegio otras "tres formas": eat – ate – eaten (base, pasado simple, participio). Esa lista no es lo mismo que las formas no personales del español. No confundas comer – comiendo – comido con como – comí – comido — la segunda lista son formas personales conjugadas.

Watch outCuidadoEnglish uses the -ing form as a noun ("Swimming is healthy"). Spanish uses the infinitive in that role instead, never the gerund.El inglés usa la forma -ing como sustantivo ("Swimming is healthy"). El español usa el infinitivo en ese papel, nunca el gerundio.
Nadando es saludable → Nadar es saludable. Fumando es malo → Fumar es malo.Nadando es saludable → Nadar es saludable. Fumando es malo → Fumar es malo.
Gerundio — the action caught in progressla acción sorprendida en marcha
Formed with -ando (-ar verbs) or -iendo (-er/-ir verbs). Normally corresponds to the English -ing form when it describes an action in progress.Se forma con -ando (verbos -ar) o -iendo (verbos -er/-ir). Normalmente corresponde a la forma inglesa -ing cuando describe una acción en progreso.

Va mejorando.He's gradually improving.
Watch outCuidadoThe Spanish gerund is not used as a noun the way the English -ing form is (see the infinitive tab). And it doesn't work as an adjective describing a noun either — the boiling water is el agua hirviendo only in a handful of fixed cases; usually Spanish reaches for a different adjective entirely.El gerundio español no se usa como sustantivo, a diferencia del -ing inglés (ver la pestaña del infinitivo). Tampoco funciona como adjetivo que describe un sustantivo en la mayoría de los casos — normalmente el español recurre a un adjetivo distinto.
Participio — the finished resultel resultado terminado
Formed with -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er/-ir verbs). Used to build perfect tenses and, sometimes, as an adjective.Se forma con -ado (verbos -ar) o -ido (verbos -er/-ir). Se usa para formar los tiempos perfectos y, a veces, como adjetivo.

This is where the infinitive earns its keep: paired with another verb, it builds some of the most common structures in everyday Spanish (called perífrasis verbales).Aquí es donde el infinitivo se gana el sueldo: emparejado con otro verbo, construye algunas de las estructuras más comunes del español cotidiano (llamadas perífrasis verbales).

Ir a, acabar de, dejar de, volver a, tener que — the connector is part of the phrase, not optional.Fíjate en el patrón: la mayoría de estas estructuras usan un pequeño conector (a, de, que) entre el primer verbo y el infinitivo. Watch outCuidadoTwo verbs have no connector at all: poder and deber go straight into the infinitive. Puedo a ayudarte → Puedo ayudarte.Dos verbos van sin conector: poder y deber van directos al infinitivo. Puedo a ayudarte → Puedo ayudarte.

Learn a couple of full sentences per structure — voy a estudiar, llevo dos años aprendiendo, he terminado — and use those as anchors. The pattern sinks in through repetition, not through the grammar rule.No intentes memorizar cada estructura de forma aislada.
