English has one simple past: I ate, I lived, I played. Spanish splits it in two, and picking the wrong one changes the meaning. The good news: there's a picture that makes it click. Forget the grammar-book labels for a moment. The picture that actually makes this click: indefinido is a photo — a finished event, click, done, it happened and it's over. Imperfecto is a film — the scene rolling on in the background, no clear start or end in sight. Olvida las etiquetas del libro de gramática por un momento. Use indefinido for something that happened once and is finished — an event with a clear edge to it, the kind that moves a story forward one snapshot at a time. Usa indefinido para algo que ocurrió una vez y ya terminó — un evento con un borde claro, del tipo que hace avanzar una historia foto a foto.

Watch outCuidado "Would" is only imperfecto when it means a repeated habit: íbamos a la playa (we would go — every summer). Hypothetical "would" — I would go if I had time — is a completely different tense, condicional (iría), not imperfecto. "Would" solo es imperfecto cuando significa un hábito repetido: íbamos a la playa (cada verano). El "would" hipotético — iría si tuviera tiempo — es un tiempo completamente distinto, el condicional (iría), no el imperfecto.

Real stories use both tenses at once. Imperfecto sets the scene — rolling in the background — and indefinido fires the events that happen inside it, one click at a time. Las historias reales usan los dos tiempos a la vez. El imperfecto planta la escena — rodando de fondo — y el indefinido dispara los eventos que ocurren dentro de ella, foto a foto.
