The Spanish subjunctive, from EnglishEl subjuntivo español, desde el inglés
English speakers hear "subjunctive" and panic. Here's the truth: you already use it — I suggest he be there, if I were you — you just never notice because English barely marks it. Spanish marks it on every single verb, every single time. The subjunctive isn't a tense — it's a mood. The indicative says "this is real." The subjunctive says "this lives in someone's head." Tap through the tabs, flip the cards, then test yourself at the end.Los angloparlantes oyen "subjuntivo" y entran en pánico. La verdad es que ya lo usan — I suggest he be there, if I were you — solo que no se dan cuenta porque el inglés apenas lo marca. El español lo marca en cada verbo, siempre. El subjuntivo no es un tiempo verbal — es un modo. El indicativo dice "esto es real". El subjuntivo dice "esto vive en la cabeza de alguien". Navega por las pestañas, gira las tarjetas y ponte a prueba al final.
The world vs. someone's headEl mundo frente a la cabeza de alguien
Two moods, one sentenceDos modos, una oración
The indicative reports the world as it is. The subjunctive filters it through someone's wishes, doubts, emotions, or judgments.El indicativo informa del mundo tal como es. El subjuntivo lo filtra a través de los deseos, las dudas, las emociones o los juicios de alguien.
The camera testLa prueba de la cámaraQuick trick: if you could take a photo of it, it's indicative. If you can't, it's subjunctive — because it hasn't happened yet, or it only exists as someone's wish. Habla español: photographable, it's happening. Hable español: nothing to photograph, it's just wanted.Truco rápido: a todo a lo que le puedas sacar una foto, es indicativo. A lo que no, es subjuntivo — porque o no ha pasado, o solo existe como deseo de alguien. Habla español: se puede fotografiar, está pasando. Hable español: no hay nada que fotografiar, solo se desea.

The verb doesn't change because of the grammar — it changes because the sentence moved from fact to desire, doubt, or judgment. If the main clause puts the action inside someone's head, the second verb goes subjunctive.El verbo no cambia por la gramática — cambia porque la oración pasó de hecho a deseo, duda o juicio. Si la cláusula principal pone la acción dentro de la cabeza de alguien, el segundo verbo va en subjuntivo.
The trigger ruleLa regla del disparadorSubjunctive almost never appears alone. It lives in the second half of a sentence, triggered by something in the first half. Watch outCuidadoIndicative stays when there's certainty or a positive belief.Creo que tiene razón (indicative) — I think she's right. No creo que tenga razón (subjunctive) — I don't think she's right. The negation flips the certainty into doubt → subjunctive fires.El indicativo se mantiene cuando hay certeza o creencia positiva.Creo que tiene razón (indicativo). No creo que tenga razón (subjuntivo). La negación convierte la certeza en duda → se activa el subjuntivo.
